Glued Laminated Eucalyptus

Vila del Rey house was one of the first houses in Brazil built entirely with glued laminated eucalyptus technology. Already widespread worldwide, glued laminated timber is nearly always mounted with pine, a conifer adapted to various parts of the globe. The innovative nature of the project is the use of this technology with Eucalyptus grandis as raw material of the glued laminated timber.

Brazil has currently almost 50% of the world's eucalyptus plantations. Most of these plantations are concentrated in the southeastern states (where are located the cities of São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Belo Horizonte). The state of Minas Gerais holds 50% of this area (or 25% of artificial eucalyptus forests in the world). Being now an abundant wood in Brazil and practically unexplored in civil construction, eucalyptus can fill the consumer market for hardwoods that sooner or later will be replaced with reforested wood. Therefore, the glued laminated eucalyptus puts an alternative to the exploration of hardwoods – still coming from illegal Amazon logging in many cases.

Architecture

The house was designed from the launch of its structure, with a mesh of 2x2 meters in the longitudinal direction and 3.6x3.6 meters in the transverse direction. This same orthogonal grid was then modified by interventions and misfits. The project strategy was to submit the mesh to the constraints of the program, thus adding contradictions to the structure: in the steady pace of the pillars we inserted syncopes and accents in unexpected tempos and spaces.

The bedrooms take place in the void of 8.5m-high ceiling and are connected by walkways that reach the ground level. Volumetrically, the house can be defined as a large container with two bedrooms that work as smaller containers; as small cubes in a large space defined by the external walls and the concrete pillars.
