London Atelier Architects
Hamberg House, Ham, Richmond

This two storey mid terraced 60ies chalet type property in Ham, Richmond, was fully refurbished, restructured and interior designed by London Atelier.

The works to the house involved total removal of all internal elements of the building as after 50 years it was in a very poor state of repairs with an outdated heating, insulation and electrical system.

The house was reconfigured over 4 and 1/2 months to meet the requirements of its new inhabitants and to suit their lifestyle. Existing elements such as the staircase, the external envelope and the newly created 60ies inspired elements and finishes sit comfortably side by side enabling an open plan modern living. The house incorporates the latest energy saving equipment to extend its life and optimise performance for years to come.

The removal of the former internal partitions allow for a continuous spatial flow throughout the ground floor with only one glazed separation on top of a newly created storage/coat and shoe cupboard to allow maximum light into the kitchen. The former external bin store has been converted to an internal larder and laundry addition; now an annex to the new kitchen and breakfast zone.

The staircase used to be the darkest zone in the house but new roof lights and a removed attic floor create a triple height light dome to the property, crowned with a fennel sculptured element through the attic. The new heating and hot water cistern are placed within the attic to maximise space within the rest of the house. Two permanent bedrooms and one study room, which can be converted through a fold-able desk into a third bedroom with a dedicated shower room, are situated on the first floor. The master bedroom features an en-suite; however a secondary sliding entrance door doubles the bathroom into a shared bathroom too.

Innovative solutions such as a fold-able table in the kitchen and study provide space saving but at the same time a flexible solution to adapt to the needs of the young family. Every piece of joinery is specifically designed to suite the space and to be functional. A joinery unit manufacture using CNC routers has been designed to complement the bespoke concrete panelling and the storage needs. Some joists at ceiling levels have been exposed and reconfigured to allow a greater ceiling height but also to provide feature lighting for the rooms.

The garden is accessed through two sets of sliding doors allowing plenty of westerly sunlight to come deep into the building throughout the year. The almost fully glazed front and rear façades visually converts the exterior to an extended interior space and the spatial dimensions feel larger, in particular with the layers of greenery starting in the planter in the front and continuing up to the mature trees within the riverbank of the Thames.

The chosen colour palette has been developed with the ambition to complement the existing 60ies flair of the area and reflects typically pale yellow, green, red and grey tones within the internal elements. The house is now a light and generous home, full of beautiful details. It combines a subtle modern materiality to the inside and respects the house’s and area’s heritage on the outside.
