The right way to make your home look more luxurious

Not all of us were blessed with gigantic mansions, but that doesn’t mean we can’t use our creativity and love for interior design (and homify’s tips and tricks, of course) to transform our current living spaces into something so much more.

Thus, even if you’re on a tight budget, you can add a sense of luxuriousness to your home. Here are some suggestions…

1. Get rid of clutter

Less is indeed more if you want your home to flaunt an elegant and luxurious look. Real life is a messy living room and a crowded coffee table filled with junk, yet a deluxe one is a minimalist-style sofa, a simple coffee table with drawers / shelves for storage, and a room that emphasises the space instead of the objects.

2. Layers and layers

It’s quite an art form throwing out unnecessary pieces and layering up what you’ve got without resorting in clutter. Remember that your main aim is to create a plush, luxurious feel.

Display some books, candles, and photos on your bookshelf, but ensure there remains adequate “breathing space” around and in-between your accessories. The same with your sofa: scatter a few throw pillows and a cosy blanket on it, yet make it look neat and welcoming instead of a dumping spot.

3. Choose a neutral / earthy colour palette

This is what’s going to tie your layers and accessories together: a matching colour scheme. Neutral tones (white and off-whites, greys, browns and beiges, blacks, etc.) are perfect for creating a sophisticated space that can grow with you. Later on, if you decide that the room requires a makeover, it’s a simple matter of swapping out the smaller pieces or accessories.

4. Light it up correctly

Leave that builder-grade brass chandelier in the past and replace it with a striking personality piece that speaks of subtle opulence. The right light fixture can even become the main centrepiece in a room, meaning you don’t need to spend as much on the rest of the room’s decorations.

And yes, layered lighting is key. So, pair up that stunning table lamp with some wall sconces, modern downlighters / a classic-style chandelier, and a floor lamp over in the corner, for instance.

5. Make magic with mirrors

Placing an oversized mirror behind a sofa or in a certain corner will immediately create the illusion of a bigger space – a very handy trick if your living quarters are on the smaller side. And try placing a mirror behind a large vase of flowers to amplify your decoration.

6. Enhance your walls with texture

Painting an accent wall is one thing, but cladding it with some texture is something entirely different as it adds colour, texture and pattern. How about some smooth wood or rough timber for a bit of warmth? Or natural stone or mosaic tiles… ?

7. Hang curtains the right way

Did you know that the higher you hang those curtains, the fancier the room will feel? Obviously your choice in curtains is also important, but the point is that if there’s a lot of space between the top of the curtains and the ceiling, the space can look sparse.

8. Stimulate the senses

Interior Design is about so much more than touch and sight. A luxurious environment also caresses the other senses.

Think about how fragrance diffusers add some elegance to hotels and restaurant bathrooms. And how scented candles and fresh flowers / indoor plants create a sophisticated ambience. But don’t stop at scent – when entertaining guests, have some tasteful, relaxing playlists ready to help everyone feel tranquil and welcome. Bonus points if you’ve got a crackling fire over in the corner to enhance that comfy ambience even more!
