Have you ever felt rather oppressed by your small home or flat, wishing it was just a bit larger?

Well, you are not alone! Plenty of us at homify have felt the same way, and so thought it might be good to whip up a little how-to on some tricks we have used to make our humble abodes look and feel more palatial than they are. From mirrors to windows, read on to learn some our favourite wily ways to enlarge your home!

1. Use large mirrors

large mirror in your small space does wonders for making it appear doubled and grand. If your aim is to make your home feel taller, choose a taller mirror rather than a wider one. Further, be sure that wide, squat mirrors are hung above furniture while taller, wall-sized mirrors are ok to place on the floor, up against a wall.

2. Use accent materials

Optimise your accent materials – in a smaller home, using light or bold materials such as woods or bright coloured paints on accent items like stairs, dining tables, door frames, stools or mirror frames are great ways to get a space feeling a bit more dynamic, decorous and, therefore, expansive.

3. Install plenty of lighting

Lighting of all kinds – natural and non – should be optimised and used as much as possible; it is unwise to underestimate how much light makes areas appear bigger. In this vein, do use spotlighting to highlight wall spaces or corners – this will showcase the scope of your home.

The varieties of pendant lighting and spot lighting are numerous these days, and they are serious space savers compared to floor or table lamps. Just be sure that you do not choose too many large lampshades or spotlights, or else they will overwhelm the space, making it feel more cramped and tiny.

4. Create separate spaces

Optimising a small home or apartment area means breaking it up into separate areas, giving it the feeling of being many different spaces instead of one, giant small one.

When doing this, focus on arranging a minimal amount of necessary furniture – do not clutter the home with unnecessary, space-hogging items! – into cosy, self-contained groupings.

5. Uncover your windows

Curtains are beautiful and provide some much welcomed sun blockage when we are trying to sleep in on Sunday. But in the rooms or areas where you are not sleeping or where you do not need privacy from the outside, try leaving your windows bare--doing so makes a room feel larger because it brings in more light, and light is always right when you are trying to create an illusion of space.

By now we hope you realise that there are plenty of easy, inexpensive ways to alter a small space into a grander, more homey space, but if you are hankering for more small space reading material, check out this list of twelve tiny homes that were designed to feel huge!
