We all have rooms that we focus on more than others, and whereas for self-pleasure and care you might try to give more considering to your private space – that typically doesn't end up happening. As homeowners and stylists we care to make a good first impression to those around us. So, living rooms, kitchens, dining rooms, patios and even bathrooms end up getting more attention than those rooms within the private sphere.

Living rooms tend to top the list of 'most-tended to' rooms and it makes perfect sense. Most homeowners are working within a budget and few perhaps aren't. Even those that have unlimited funds still like to cut corners and find deals – it's an experience and an expectation that can apply to all and we have it completely covered here at homify thanks to the know-how of our wonderful professionals! Check out the great ideas below for ways to give your living room a low-cost, yet luxurious, makeover…

1. Add black

Black is solid, clean and adds a stable sense of drama to any room. For a cost-efficient way to add small amounts of black, consider coffee table sets, lamps and rugs that can balance the lighter pieces you might have on the walls.

2. Add a great, high-pile rug

High-pile rugs are comfy, cosy and quite luxurious if you choose one with a high sheen. The metallic, brown-based sheen used here would also be great with an art deco style room – as would silver, too!

3. Greenery

Perhaps one of the cheapest and budget-friendly options on this list – plants and greenery! Succulents and common house plants are a great way to add drama and a sense of liveliness to any room.

4. Accessorise appropriately

Keep your accessories minimal and choose the cheapest options you can. These aren't furnishings and items that you'll worry about long and substantial wear and tear. Think about budget-friendly picture frames, candle holders, lamps, plants and art work.

5. Art matters

No matter where your budget is, always consider adding art – posters, family pictures, graphic prints, etc. These pieces are some of the cheapest items you can add and with a plethora of both online and local art sources, find which style suits you best and get going.

6. Colour is most important

A bucket or two of paint can go a long way. A long way as in changing-your-entire-home-kind-of-way.

Purchase one or two colours within the same shade family and think about dynamic ways to use them. One colour for the interior walls and perhaps another colour around baseboards, upper-mounding and window and door frames.

7. Keep everything bright and light

Remember, often the best things in life are free and keeping your home light and bright is definitely free. Replace old curtains and sheers with light neutrals and open all windows as soon as you awake for a great morning experience.

Sometimes cheap, or budget-friendly can mean low quality – but remember that's not always the case. Budget-friendly bedroom design can also be a great way to get a luxurious, high-end look on your own schedule!
