For those of you looking for a little inspiration to create charming, open spaces with warmth and elegance, look no further! In this luxurious design, the AM Residence, Isabella Canaan Architects and Associates have brought into being a home which combines comfort, class and a very distinct personality.

On first approach one is given a full view of the exterior, unimpeded by the opacity of a front fence. The home beyond cleverly uses the gradient of the site to enhance space and define areas. Prominent features are used to bring spaces to their full potential; exposed wooden ceilings add height and character while the back lit greenery, beyond the living room windows, brings the outside in. Each area is furnished to add interest and texture to the design, the plush finishes imploring one to settle in for the night. Now let's take a tour of this extravagant yet cosy abode.

Looking through the fence

The first thing that catches the eye when one approaches the front facade of this residence is the impressive glass fence. Instead of barricading the house behind a large wall that prohibits visibility, this glass fence gives the impression of connection to the street. Behind it lays a traditional form comprised of straight lines, a sloped ceramic tiled roof, and large balcony. The balcony creates a porte-cochere type structure over the secondary entrance to the home. The main entrance is marked by a pergola structure, covered with glass, at the end of the end of the sizeable flight of stairs. We can see that the textured surface of the plaster contrasts the smoothness of the glass and metal.

The grand and connected entry

Upon entering the home, there is a great sense of spaciousness created by the double height volume that leaves the beautiful timber roof structure exposed.  A white ceiling lowers over the living space, defining it as separate. An opening appears at the side of this lowered ceiling, creating a visual connection between the upper level hall way and this space below. Carpets rugs are introduced over the white tiles to bring a comfort and softness to the living area and the stark white and warm timbers are complimented with neutral tones and textured wall elements.

Changes in level

The natural slope of the land is assimilated into the design, with the dining room and living area finding  separation through the change in level. The steps draw these spaces apart, while they remain completely visually connected. The glass top on the dining room table evokes a transparency similar to the front fence. Black on black

The kitchen steps away from the neutral colour pallet and makes a bold, black statement. The black mosaic island bench is both fun and sleek. The black granite bench tops stand out from the matte finish of the painted cabinetry doors; and, similarly the higher level cabinetry is given painted glass doors. Sitting above the bench, a sliding window opens to the outdoor area to create a servery.

Kitchen servery

Here we can see the lacquered wooden bench on the other side of the servery; connecting the kitchen to an outdoor dining area. This outdoor space can also be accessed from the hallway adjoining the living room and the path that leads up the side of the house.

The master bedroom

The master bedroom sees the beautiful exposed roof structure making an appearance again. The lack of ceiling increases the height of the space and the timber creates a warm and inviting atmosphere. The large sliding door opens the room up to the walkway with views below. Much like the living space, a neutral colour palate, textured rugs and plush fabrics are employed in this room.

Balance in the bathroom

The bathroom picks up the mosaic tile that was seen earlier in the kitchen; but, here a warm and earthy brown is used. Large mirrors increase the feeling of spaciousness in the limited confines of the room. For more bathroom design ideas, take a look here!
