A romantic bedroom atmosphere is an important consideration for both you and your partner. When one normally thinks of preparing for romance, you think of candles, dim lighting and nice, plush bed accessories.  However, although these ideas certainly work, they are more temporary fixes to a space that should seem romantic all the time – even if just for you!

When designing a bedroom with romance in mind, there are many design techniques to consider – from colour and lighting to accessories and furnishings. Think of ways in which you can create a romantic atmosphere that will last in your bedroom year-round, that's comfortable (after all, it is a bedroom) and most importantly, one that lets your individuality shine through!

Below, we have created a complete list of six tips for you to think about when creating a romantic bedroom!

Add a beautiful dressing table

Dressing tables are not to be forgotten when it comes to creating a romantic bedroom. Imagine your partner sitting there, preparing for the day or even reading a book. It is a great way to utilise a different area of the bedroom while at the same time not being overly distracting to the overall design.

Dressing tables can also give your bedroom a romantic, calming feel while at the same time oozing style and functionality. Dressing tables are quite easy to find – in that almost any smaller sized table can be transformed into one – just add a unique mirror on the wall and there you have it!

Whether you decide to buy one brand new, or pick a vintage or antique find for a cottage-chic feel – dressing tables should be a space that speak for you, and you only.  Choose funky flower vases, grab your grandmother's pearls and lay them out and choose several nice bottles of perfume to top the look off. Also, don't feel pressured to find a chair that matches perfectly – mix-matching this space is what makes it speak.  Use a dressing table chair as a place to lay robes or night gowns, or an area you can throw your work clothes on without making the room look overly cluttered!

Perhaps a chaise at the end of the bed?

A chaise is one of those products where you sometimes don't know whether to consider it a furnishing, or more of a decorative accessory due to their small, often compact size.  But let's not get caught up on logistics here! A chaise is a great way to add more seating to your bedroom – besides your bed.  When paired with a perfect side- or end-table – they can be a great space to serve coffee, tea or a good morning breakfast to your partner.

When thought of as more of a decorative accessory – think of them as an item in your bedroom that be a little different, or funky.  Play around with the colour palette and texture of you chaise – or add some new legs!  Make sure to stick to a general colour palette within the room, as to create some continuity – but an eye-popping chaise never hurt anyone!

Proper lighting is always important

Lighting is by far one of these easiest and most cost effective ways to add romance to your bedroom! First, consider how you can work with the artificial and natural light in your room.  If you are blessed with windows, think about sheers that will block a minimal amount of light and will flow beautifully while the windows are open to the wind.  For a more dramatic effect, consider long sheers that will flow to the ground and layer them with different shades of either light or dark colours.

If windows are hard to come by in your space, then artificial light is fine too! Choose fixtures that will spread light evenly throughout your room – and maybe even spend a little extra money and give yourself the ability to dim your lights to just the right shade.

Of course, we are talking about romance – so it's also a great idea to forget both artificial and natural light and gather candles together, either normal or electric candles of different heights and hues for a perfect romantic environment!

Of course, a luxury bed

Our first suggestion is one that should resonate with you whether you have romance in your life or not: A large, luxury bed.  It's better for your health, seriously! When thinking of luxury beds, think in terms of size, durability and comfort.  It's also important to consider what your space can handle – if you choose a size too large, then your space can quickly look overcrowded, or worse – small.  This will ruin any attempt you try to make for a romantic atmosphere.

In this example we have chosen an unusual, round shaped bed that is fairly large in size. Although most don't consider round beds – we have shown you here how an unusual bed can really work with different types of spaces.  This bedroom appears to be in a loft setting, with wonderful exposed bricks, exposed wooden ceiling beams and basic concrete floors – however, it still eludes a rather rustic feel with the light colour palette.

Try to think outside the box when it comes to your new, luxury bed – we promise, you won't regret it! Opera s.r.l. has some great examples!

Soft, Furry Furnishings are a must!

This suggestion is great in general when thinking about bedroom design – choose soft and furry furnishings and accessories that will make your space seem heavenly from the very start.  With both natural and faux furs offering a wide variety of colours and textures – this one is really up to you!

If your bedroom is of a lighter colour palette, then this should be quite easy – look at soft sheers for the windows, furry rugs and throws for either the floor or to lay over chairs and furnishings and fluffy duvets for the ultimate effect!  What's great about this option, is often old family heirlooms and hand sewn blankets can offer comfort to a bedroom while also offering familiarity and personality.  Of course, these furnishings can be easily removed, or switched around depending on your mood, or the season.  Summer tends to be a time when furs and soft blankets need to be stored away for a more cool and refreshing feel.

Don't forget about the wall colour

Choosing the right wall colour for your new and improved romantic bedroom is really about freedom of choice.  Personally, we suggest sticking with shades of greys or off-whites where it'll be easier for you in the long run to choose furnishings and accessories – or change your bedroom as the seasons change.

Here, different shades of grey are used to demonstrate the ability to easily add pops of colour with dark violet velour window shades, and a bedside bench.  What really makes this room pop? The dark wood floors, the window coverings – and of course, that beautiful and dramatic chandelier.  We know that keeping a space fresh and romantically dramatic at the same time can seem like a design challenge – but with the right colour palette – anything is possible!
