Saunas have many restorative properties, and they can really enhance your overall health. Cultures around the world have important sauna and steaming rituals. They have long been used by indigenous groups in Central America as well as by the Finnish. In fact, most homes in the small Nordic country have a built-in sauna! Today you can find saunas used all around the world. Spending time in a sauna can help relieve cold symptoms, enhance physical endurance, soothe rheumatic pain, improve depression, and more.

While many people access the sauna at a local gym, the properties are enhanced when you can enjoy a steam in the comforts of your own home. You’ll be able to relax more and reap the benefits on a regular basis. If you are not from a culture where home saunas are commonplace, how to add one to your home may not be so clear. That’s why we’ve come up with some tips for helping your sauna stand out!

Can sauna design be modern? Yes!

While traditional sauna designs are most common, don’t let this look deter you from bringing a sauna to your home. There really is no reason why the sauna can’t be tweaked to match the surrounding style of your home or to fit your personal aesthetic preferences.

If you’d like to go modern with your sauna design, there are a few different ways to do so. Opting for blue colour tones in the sauna is not only calming, but it also allows a departure from the entirely wooden look we’re used to. You could also go for a wood stain that is darker. Also, do not be afraid to deviate from the norm. These saunas by Carmenta Wellness are made of a mixture of concrete and wood to create a more dynamic and modern look. Lighting can also help to make your sauna look contemporary and up to date.

Lighting in your sauna

Lighting is an important aspect for consideration because saunas typically do not have windows that allow for illumination by natural light. Therefore, an electrical lighting system is almost always necessary. Because of the unique climate created in your sauna, the lighting must be able to withstand prolonged exposure to heat, dryness, and in some saunas, humidity. LED lights work well for these purposes. They are relatively cheap and remarkably long lasting.

One of the most common styles of lighting in the sauna is a centrally located beehive shaped light fixture. There are plenty of other options, however, for those who’d like to do something more unique in order to help their saunas to stand out. One of our personal favourites is to go with a glowing indirect light option, like we can see with this lighting, where the wall meets the bench.

Steam room design

Saunas are quite popular, but they also have a counterpart that’s equally worth keeping in mind if you’re looking to introduce a heat based spa treatment to your home. The steam room typically saturates its inhabitants with hot vapours, while most saunas involve dry heat. Unlike saunas, steam rooms are usually made of glass.

The benefit of a sauna lies more in its abilities to improve circulation, relaxation, and muscle stimulation. Steam rooms are better for detoxifying and improving respiration. If dry heat is too intense for you or if you identify with the latter set of benefits, a good steam room may be a better option for you. Like saunas, steam rooms come in a traditional style, but there are also many other variations to choose from. As mentioned above, steam rooms are usually made of glass. Traditionally, however, it was common to find steam rooms designed and decorated with mosaics.

Decorating your sauna

Sauna decoration can be a bit of a confounding topic. While you want simplicity in the space where you experience this ritual, the experience can feel more special if the sauna is individualized in some way. Figuring out appropriate décor can be tricky in its own right because the decorations themselves have to be able to withstand prolonged and frequent periods of high heat.

That’s why we recommend adding personal touches with the design of the sauna itself. Choosing the shapes and architectural details of the seating is one way of doing this. Painting or staining the wood in the sauna can also help make it a bit more aesthetically unique. Another detail that works nicely is to incorporate some stone into the design, as we can see in this sauna, for a more varied look.

What door is suitable for a sauna?

Naturally, the sauna is part of a larger decorative scheme whether it is located in the yard or inside the home. Therefore, the exterior ought to fit with the existing style. Saunas are often situated in bathrooms or near swimming pools.

With this in mind, one particular element of the sauna that should be taken into account is the door that links it to the surrounding space. Glass doors are common when the sauna is located inside because it helps create a better sense of spatial continuity, particularly when the sauna is in the bathroom. A heavier door on a wooden frame with only a glass window works a bit better when the sauna is outside because this kind of door will be more equipped to withstand the elements.
