When moving into a new home, adding more light and functionality to rooms is always a challenge. But whether it’s the basement, guest bedroom, hallway, or a bathroom that’s lacking in light, finding the perfect lighting levels doesn’t have to be tricky.

In fact, thanks to some creative design tips (provided by some of the best Interior Designers/Decorators and Architects here on homify), adding extra dazzle to that dark room is easier (and more fun) than ever before…

1. Place mirrors carefully

A mirror placed in the wrong spot won’t do much for that room’s gloominess. Make the most of these delicious décor objects by strategically placing them near light sources, including doors and windows.

Vice versa, commit to also placing a lamp next to a mirror (you may need to remove it a few times to find the right brightness) to see how it influences the room’s lighting and shadows.

2. Add ambient light sources

Want to add a mere touch more light instead of driving up the room’s luminosity levels? Consider decorating with fairy string lights, candles, orb lights, or other ambient lights that are ideal for adding charm and not-too-bright illumination.

Just ensure your choice of lights have warm, yellow glows instead of cool, bluish tones.

3. Choose the right colours and furnishings

Never forget that décor and furnishings are not just about what fits with what, but also how it impacts the lighting of your interiors. For instance, a dark-coloured sofa is probably not the best choice for a dim-lit space, which is why a lighter colour (like beige, off-white, or even a natural colour like blue or green) can work much better and make the room look more spacious.

4. Look down

What’s that dark room’s floor up to? Even if the floor materials are not dark, you can still consider adding a lightly coloured rug for some extra softness and texture.

Remember that colours and patterns can also help to make a room seem bigger or smaller, so choose wisely!

5. What about your walls?

Light wall colours (like white, soft grey, beige) help to bounce light around the room and make it look more spacious than it really is. And that’s not magic, it’s simply good interior design.

But if you feel that white can look too clinical, there’s always the option of adding ornamental trimmings to the ceiling for extra detail, or to just paint a focal wall instead of all four walls.

6. Clean those windows

Sometimes all it takes to get a room looking right again is proper cleaning. Like those grimy windows allowing little-to-no light to enter your gloomy space.

Sort out this issue quickly and effectively by wiping down those windows (and glass door, if there is one) with a proper glass-cleaning agent. And be sure to commit to keeping those windows clean and clear on a regular basis.

7. Choose a slim, subtle style

Adding bulky furniture and accessories to a dark room will only increase those shadows. Avoid this design blunder by opting for slim-style, minimalist furnishings that are close to the ground to save on visual space. Remember to also leave ample legroom between pieces for ‘breathing room’ or additional lighting opportunities. And bonus points if you can get furniture crafted from see-through materials like glass and plastic to help clear up even more visual space.
